Before you book

Why the third wax is better than the first

Your hair isn't all growing at the same time. At any given moment some follicles are actively growing, some have stopped, and some are resting below the surface with nothing showing at all.

Waxing only removes what's currently above the skin. That's why a first wax can look perfect and then seem to sprout again within a fortnight. It isn't regrowth, it's the follicles that were resting arriving on schedule.

Stick to a regular four to five week cycle and those groups gradually fall into step. After three or four appointments most people find the whole area clears at once, stays clear longer, and comes back visibly finer, because repeatedly lifting a hair from the root weakens the follicle over time.

The corollary matters just as much: don't shave between appointments. Shaving resets everything you've built and puts a blunt tip on the hair, which is the main reason ingrowns start.

Two kinds of wax, and why we switch

Not every area wants the same wax, and using one for everything is the difference between a comfortable appointment and a sore one.

  • Hard wax is applied thickly and sets, gripping the hair rather than the skin, then lifts off without a strip. It's slower, and it's what sensitive areas want, face, underarms, bikini and Brazilian.
  • Strip wax goes on in a thin layer and comes off with a cloth strip. It's much faster over large areas, which makes it the right choice for full legs, arms and backs.

You don't need to specify. We pick per area, which is why a full leg and an underarm in the same appointment won't feel the same.

Two weeks of growth, please

Hair needs to be about 5mm, roughly two weeks since you last shaved, or the wax has nothing to grip and you get a patchy result. Too long isn't a problem; we'll trim at the start rather than send you home. If you only want the fine facial hair dealt with, threading needs just 2–3mm.

On the day

What actually happens

What we're doing, and what to know

Which areas, how much off, and anything relevant: sensitive skin, medication, first wax, recent sun. Isotretinoin (Roaccutane) is the one that changes the answer entirely.

Cleanse and prep

Skin cleansed and a light pre-wax product applied so the wax grips hair and not skin. Anything longer than 5mm gets trimmed here.

Section by section

Small sections with the skin held taut. That's what makes it quicker and less sharp. Hard wax on sensitive areas, strip wax where speed matters.

Tweeze and check

Any strays lifted by hand, then a check over the whole area. Say if we've missed something, much easier now than tomorrow.

Soothe

A calming lotion to settle the skin. Pinkness for an hour or two is normal and fades on its own.

Look after it

Before and after, mostly about ingrowns

Nearly every bad waxing story is an ingrown hair story, and ingrowns are largely preventable.

Before you come in

  • Don't shave or trim for two weeks, about 5mm is what we need.
  • Exfoliate gently a day or two ahead, not on the day itself.
  • Arrive with clean, dry skin. No oil, no heavy moisturiser.
  • Skip retinoids and acid exfoliants on the area for a few days beforehand.
  • Tell us about medication, isotretinoin (Roaccutane) means waiting.

For 24 hours after

  • No hot showers, baths, saunas, spa or swimming.
  • No gym, and nothing that makes you sweat.
  • No direct sun, sunbeds or fake tan on the area.
  • Loose cotton rather than tight synthetics.
  • From 48 hours: exfoliate gently two or three times a week. This is the ingrown fix.

Waxing questions, answered

How much does waxing cost in Truganina?

Waxing at Drashti Beauty Salon starts at $8 for an upper lip. Underarm is $10, eyebrow $15, half arm or half leg $20, full arm or full leg $30, Brazilian $40 and a full body wax is $120.

How long does my hair need to be for waxing?

About 5mm, or roughly two weeks of growth. If the hair is too short the wax cannot grip it and you will not get a clean result. Please do not shave in the two weeks before your appointment.

How long does waxing last?

Most people get 3 to 6 weeks before regrowth, because waxing removes the hair from the root rather than cutting it at the surface. Waxing on a regular cycle tends to make regrowth finer and sparser over time.

Does waxing hurt?

There is a brief sting as the strip lifts, strongest on the first visit and on sensitive areas like the bikini line and underarms. It fades within seconds. We work in small sections and finish with a soothing lotion to calm the skin.

What should I do before and after a wax?

Before: exfoliate gently a day or two ahead, arrive with clean dry skin, and skip moisturiser or oil on the day. After: avoid hot showers, saunas, swimming pools and direct sun for 24 hours, and skip the gym that day. Exfoliating again after 48 hours helps prevent ingrown hairs.

How do I prevent ingrown hairs?

Exfoliate gently from about 48 hours afterwards and keep it up two or three times a week. That's the single most effective thing you can do.

Wear loose cotton for the first day, keep the area moisturised, and don't shave between appointments: a shaved blunt tip is far more likely to curl back into the skin than a tapered waxed one.

How often should I book?

Every four to five weeks. That isn't an upsell, your hair grows in staggered groups, and a regular cycle gradually brings them into step so the whole area clears at once and stays clear longer.

Leave it too long and the groups scatter again, which is why an occasional wax never feels as good as a regular one.

It's my first wax, what should I know?

Three things. The first one is the sharpest you'll ever have, and it gets easier. Two weeks of growth is non-negotiable, so don't shave to "tidy up" beforehand. And whatever you're waxing, you can ask us to stop or slow down at any point.

If it's a bikini or Brazilian, start with the bikini line, smaller area, less sensitive, and a much kinder introduction.

Can I wax my face if I use retinol?

Usually not, and this is one of the few times we'll turn a booking away. Retinoids and acid exfoliants thin the surface layer of skin, and wax grips that layer as well as the hair, so facial waxing carries a real risk of lifting skin.

Threading is the answer here. Only cotton touches your skin, so it's generally fine when facial waxing isn't.

Can I get waxed on my period or while pregnant?

Both are fine. On your period, wear a tampon or cup for intimate waxing. It's routine and nobody will comment. Skin is more sensitive in the days just before and during, so book a week after if you have the flexibility.

Pregnancy is a common time to book, especially later on when reaching gets difficult. Tell us and we'll take it slower and adjust positioning. There's more detail on the Brazilian wax page.

Should I wax, thread or bleach my facial hair?

Wax it if it's a larger or coarser patch. Thread it if it's a defined line, brows, upper lip, chin, or if you use retinol. Bleach it if it's soft fuzz spread across a broad area like the cheeks, where removing it would leave texture across a large surface.

Do I need to book, or can I walk in?

Walk-ins are welcome when a room is free, but waxing appointments run longer than threading so booking is the safer bet, especially for full leg, Brazilian or full body. Booking online takes under a minute and you get an instant SMS confirmation.
