What it actually does
Four steps, in an order that matters. Here's why each one is there.
Most facials do one thing well. This one does four in sequence, and the sequence is the point, each step makes the next one work better.
The technique has a name: hydradermabrasion. It resurfaces the skin with water and serum under gentle vacuum rather than with abrasive crystals or acid, which is what makes it comfortable enough to have done the week of an event.
- Deep cleanse. Everything on the surface comes off, makeup, sunscreen, the day. Nothing below works if this step is rushed.
- Gentle exfoliation. The layer of dead surface cells is lifted. That layer is what makes skin look dull and grey under bathroom lighting, and it's also what blocks anything you apply at home from getting anywhere.
- Suction-assisted extraction. The step that sets this apart. Congestion is drawn out of the pore under gentle vacuum rather than squeezed out between two fingers. Same result, without the pinching, the bruising or the two days of angry red marks.
- Serum infusion. Hydrating serum goes on while the skin is cleared and at its most receptive. Applied at the start it would sit on top of everything else; applied here it actually gets in.

Tell us before we start if…
…you've had a peel, laser or microneedling in the last two weeks, you take or recently finished isotretinoin (Roaccutane), you have an active cold sore, or you're pregnant. None of these are automatically a no, but each one changes what we use, and a couple change whether today is the day.

Skin consultation
A proper look at your skin under good light, a few questions about what you use at home and what's bothering you. This decides which serums come out. It isn't a script.
Cleanse
Double cleansed to get everything off, including sunscreen, which is more stubborn than most people realise.
Exfoliate
Gentle resurfacing to lift the dull surface layer. Nothing abrasive, nothing dragged across the skin.
Extraction
The suction step, worked slowly across the congested areas. It feels like a firm tug moving over the skin, odd the first time, not painful. Say the word and we ease off.
Infuse and finish
Hydrating serum while the skin is clear and receptive, then a soothing finish and SPF. You'll be a little pink for perhaps an hour.

Before and after
An hour of work is easy to undo. Three days of care is what makes it hold.
In the days before
- Stop retinol, tretinoin, AHA and BHA three to five days beforehand.
- No scrubs, peels or facial waxing for a few days.
- Don't book straight after a heavy sun day or with fresh sunburn.
- Come with a clean face if you can. It all has to come off anyway.
- Bring the names of any prescription skincare you're using.
For the next three days
- No makeup for a few hours if you can manage it.
- No gym, sauna, steam, spa or swimming that day.
- No hot showers, lukewarm only for 24 hours.
- Retinol and acids stay off for three days.
- SPF the next morning, without fail. Freshly exfoliated skin burns faster.
How often, and when something cheaper is better
How often is sensible
Roughly every four weeks while you're working on something, congestion, texture, dullness. That's not a sales number, it's your skin's renewal cycle, and treating faster than skin renews doesn't get you there quicker.
Once your skin is where you want it, most people move to every six to eight weeks as maintenance. Nobody needs one weekly and we'll say so if you ask for it.

A hydra facial at Drashti Beauty Salon is $100 and is booked as a 60-minute appointment. It's the most involved treatment on our facial menu.

What is a hydra facial?

If your skin is fine and you want an hour of maintenance, save your money and book a classic facial. If you're dealing with blocked pores, dull texture or dehydration, this is the one that does something about it.
Is there any downtime?
No, and that's the main reason people choose it over a peel. There's no peeling, flaking or visible recovery. Most people are a little pink for an hour or so and then look better than when they arrived, which is why it's a popular booking before an event.
Can I have one before a wedding or event?
Yes, and the timing is worth getting right. For a big event, book one about a week beforehand rather than the day before, that gives any small blemish that surfaces after extraction time to settle.
If it's your very first facial with us, don't make it the week of your wedding. Book a trial one a month or two out so we both know how your skin responds.
How often should I get one?
About every four weeks matches your skin's natural renewal cycle, which is the sensible rhythm if you're working on congestion or texture. Once your skin is where you want it, most people drop back to every six to eight weeks for maintenance.
Nobody needs one weekly, and we'll tell you if a cheaper facial would do the same job.
Does it hurt?
No. It's one of the more comfortable treatments on the menu. The suction feels like a firm tugging sensation moving across the skin, strange the first time but not painful, and there's none of the pinching that comes with manual extraction. Tell us if anything feels sharp and we'll ease the pressure.
Is it suitable for sensitive skin?
Usually yes. It's gentler than a chemical peel or microdermabrasion because nothing abrasive is dragged across the skin.
That said, tell us before we start if you have rosacea, eczema, active cystic acne or a compromised skin barrier, because those change what we do or whether today is the right day.
Is there anything that means I shouldn't book one?
Wait if you have active cold sores, sunburn, broken skin or an infection on the face. If you take or have recently finished isotretinoin (Roaccutane), or you've had a chemical peel, laser or microneedling in the last two weeks, tell us and we'll book you further out.
If you're pregnant, say so. It's generally fine, but it changes which serums we use.
How should I prepare?
Stop retinol, tretinoin and acid exfoliants three to five days beforehand, skip scrubs for a few days, and come with a clean face if you can, makeup has to come off anyway. Don't book one straight after a heavy sun day. If you're on prescription skincare, bring the name of it.
What should I do afterwards?
Leave your skin alone for the rest of the day: no makeup for a few hours if you can manage it, no gym, sauna or swimming, and no hot showers. Keep retinol and acids off for three days.
